About Minneriya National Park

Established as a national park in 1997, Minneriya protects more than 8,800 hectares of forests, grasslands, wetlands, and the historic Minneriya Reservoir, originally built by King Mahasen during the 3rd century AD.

The reservoir provides water throughout the dry season, attracting large numbers of elephants and other wildlife from surrounding forests, making the park one of Sri Lanka’s most important conservation areas.

Its location near Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa also makes Minneriya an ideal addition to Cultural Triangle tours.
